Because of a project at work, my boss asked me to learn how to use Photoshop. You've seen my silly altered photos here on LOTD before, but I did those using Microsoft Paint. I've been practicing Photoshop at home and decided to play around with Grant Wood's classic painting, American Gothic. -- Daisy
This painting has been parodied quite a bit, but what you might not know is that it is a depiction of an old farmer and his spinster daughter, not his wife, as some assume. Also, Wood asked his dentist to pose as the farmer and had his own sister pose for the part of the daughter in the painting. They posed separately, not together, and never stood in front of the house in Iowa that you see in the background.
One thing I noticed right away about this painting is how glum the farmer and his daughter look. I wondered if I could make them smile. Everybody likes a barbecue, right?
Next I tried a new dress, a little pink lipstick, and some bling for the daughter, and gave the farmer a bunch of daisies to hold instead of that old pitchfork. (Pitchforks are used to muck manure out of barn stalls. Who wants to have a portrait made of themselves holding a pitchfork?).
A concert, perhaps?
Next I decided to invite the farmer and his daughter to my hometown. It's a cheery little place. I showed them around town, and we went to DQ for a little ice cream and walked around the town square. Here you can see them in front of our courthouse in the middle of the town square. Obviously, they are still not smiling.
OK, fine. I sent them back to Iowa. Oh wait! I just found Waldo!
Not even finding Waldo made them smile. I was about to give up when Cary and the "one who shall not be named" arrived.
Cary suggested I try sending in a photobomber because they always make his readers laugh. So I took his advice and gave it a try.
